A Statement from The Foundation Campus Ministry in Response to the

United Methodist Church Special General Conference 2019

February 28, 2019

To all students, faculty and staff of the University of Denver,

The Foundation Campus Ministry is an ecumenical partnership with support from the Rocky Mountain Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), The High Plains Regional Council of the Episcopal Church, and the Mountain Sky Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. Our board members and local partner congregations of all denominations, including United Methodist, stand in proud support of full inclusion of members of the LGBTQIA+ community in our campus ministry, in churches, in leadership positions, and as beautiful and beloved children of God. We believe in a divine Creator who celebrates all genders, races, cultures, sexual orientations, socio-economic statuses, skills, & abilities.

This week, with heavy hearts we witnessed decisions made to maintain and increase restrictive language toward the presence of LGBTQIA+ persons within the United Methodist Church. As an inclusive and affirming Christian campus ministry with United Methodist connections, The Foundation Campus Ministry wants to make it clear to the community at large that no changes to our ministry to ALL will take place following the decisions made at the United Methodist Church Special General Conference held in St. Louis this week.

At that conference, a small majority of United Methodist delegates from around the world voted to maintain restrictive language toward LGBTQIA+ clergy serving in the denomination and to increase consequences for clergy who perform same-gender weddings.

We mourn with you the harm that religious institutions have done and continue to do by marginalizing specific communities and we recognize that the actions of the United Methodist Church may bring up past trauma and difficult feelings and emotions. We urge you to reach out to support networks including DU’s Pride Lounge, the Trevor Project, and of course, The Foundation.

If you have concerns or would like pastoral care or a listening ear, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Liza Stoltz Hanson,

Director, The Foundation Campus Ministry
